The Sovereignity Of God

One of the most difficult statements to accept especially in light of the prevailing economic and security challenges plaguing the world is that God is sovereign and He rules in the affairs of men. But I wanted to bring some perspective to the topic of the sovereignty of God. When we say God is sovereign, we mean that He exercises control and supreme authority over the affairs of men. However, in spite of his sovereignty, He gave man freewill and will do nothing to take away this freedom of choice from man. God wanted a relationship with mankind that will be borne out of love for him and not as a result of compulsion. 

Although God is sovereign, He is also merciful. The book of Judges contains an amazing example of God’s mercy. Moses informed the children of Israel about the consequences of serving other gods and rejecting the commandments of God. However, in the book of Judges we see the Israelites time and time again reject God to serve other gods. Even when they ended up being oppressed by their enemies as a consequence of their disobedience to God, God always sent a deliverer when they cried out to him. 

This same principle of mercy is what He operates with today. Despite his ability to destroy evildoers, 2 Peter 3: 9 says:

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

His will is still that all men should come to repentance. This is the reason why he will not destroy the earth yet. However, as scriptures have predicted, the Day of Judgment will come and every man will be rewarded for his works. So we can be confident in this fact that God is for us and prayer is our mechanism to bring God’s will to earth. In the meantime, we can be assured of his love and protection towards us, His children.
