THE WHY QUESTION (episode 2)

WE HAVE ALL BEEN ON THAT ROAD

I guess at some point in our lives, we have cried foul either from personal experiences or by observing happenings around us. This conclusion comes when there is no correlation between the amount of wrong we commit (if we committed any wrong at all) and the amount of pain we experience. For example, why would a couple who love children not be able to have any child of their own? What crime did a child born with a terminal disease commit that he/she would have to go through pain for the rest of his/her life? Why do some have to go hungry? In my own instance, why did my sister die? Why did she give up the ghost in my arms while I was praying to God for her healing?

The list is endless. In all this we cry out in despair; oh life is not fair, it’s all a game of chess and random chaos; she believed in God, so why didn’t God save her? How come we have a God who claims to be good yet is up there watching these bad incidences with legs crossed and arms folded?
When we make these conclusions, we act the Judge. Who is the Judge? Who or what determines good or evil? Remember Eve? Yes Eve, from the garden of Eden. After her conversation with the serpent, her perception changed forever. What previously was not good for food (because God had said so), suddenly became good for food and desirable for wisdom. That opinion was born without complete knowledge and so it is sometimes with us.

To drive home the point: have you ever changed your mind over an issue? Have your opinion over a thing changed? If yes, how then can we base conclusions on what is good or bad on our knowledge that is sometimes limited or myopic? When we make these conclusions, we play the Judge, only that this time we are corruptible as we do it without the Judge himself- God.

Job 38:2, “who is this that questions my wisdom, with words without knowledge?”
